I recently had a Class 3 hitch installed on my daughter's 2003 Aztek, which did not have the tow package.  She wants to tow a small camper.  Her Tek does not have factory air shocks.  Reading up on this site, I saw several recommendations for Monroe air shocks and so I bought a pair and an air line kit, but when I told my mechanic, he warned me off installing them because he said they'd require being filled with some amount of air at all times and the air level would have to be maintained, a nuisance my daughter would not appreciate.  I have an 2003 GMC Envoy with a hitch and I recently replaced its rear shocks with a pair that have an external coil spring each that comes into play only when the rear end is more heavily loaded.  I tried to buy these for the Aztek at my local NAPA store where I bought them for the Envoy, but was told after some searching on their part that they don't make them for an Aztek. So, my question for the group is:  Has anyone come up with a way to beef up the rear shocks or suspension without using air shocks?  What are the pluses and minuses for doing it this way?

I know your looking for substitutes, but I put the monroe air shocks on three weeks ago and set them to 95 psi to tow my pontoon boat.  Have yet to touch them since filling them.   Ride quality and towing is night and day compared to the factory rear shocks.  Much improved with and without towing.
