Ok. I'm ordering my new XM antenna [GM part number 15205583] and having it shippped next day air, so I can get it installed on my days off work. It will be a through-the-roof install, so obviously I'm going to need to drop the headliner, in the front at least. Nothing more than a few inches, but how is it held up? I know take the visors off, but after that, it's beyond me. Do I need to take any trims off?

The wire will run down the passenger side A pillar, behind the trim of course, under the dash and to the stereo compartment. Any suggestions on best way to snake the wires would help. Thanks

As for dropping the headliner, I'm sorry I have no advice to give.  I ran my XM antenna wire under the weatherstrip around the front windshield, and down into the lower driverside dash.

Yeah, I'm doing a through-the-roof install. This will be permentant. Kinda neat, it's a GM XM antenna, but going to be used for Sirius. Man they know what they're talking about over at www.siriusbackstage.com

KissmyAztek,

I most likely can help you out with the procedure to drop the headliner.  I should be able to provide you with something at least at some point today.  Please email me through the site.

I believe you may have to drop the entire headliner.  I don't think you could drop part of it, without damaging the substrate.  The sunroof may complicate things a bit, but I will know more once I have had a chance to look into it.

All my side panels and the headliner are off in my Tek as I'm installing Dynamat (equivalent).   I don't think you can remove the headliner completely without removing some of the side panels.  You can take it part of the way down, though I don't think I'd want to leave it half hanging there too aweful long.  (and mine is with the moonroof, so no ONSTAR/Upper console)

Have fun!!!!

I just need it low enough so I won't hit it while drilling, be able to tighten the bolt securing the antenna down, and route the wire. Hoepfully no longer than an hour or so. Of course, if I don't drop the whole thing I'd get some 2x2s and cut them to the right height, to hold it up, so as no pressure is no it to want to crease or bend, or break.

2005 TEK on 20s

« Reply #7 on: June 06, 2006, 03:08:27 PM »

Sorry I should of posted quicker before you got started on dropping your headliner. I have Sirus radio installed in mine and I've had it for approx 7 months now. I have the low level antenna and it is mounted right next to my 3rd brake light. Its magnetic but since over a little time it wanted to start rubbing a little paint away i just put some 2 sided tape on it and mounted it right back in the same place. I then routed the 20 foot wire between the rear hatch and tucked th wire along the roof paneling and then along the drivers side roof panel/rubber seal. Down the drivers A Pillar and then under the dash right to the middle of my console. Absolutely no drilling, cutting or anything. Less work as well. If you want to see pictures I will post them.

I know that the aftermarket antennas can be installed very well, very hidden, and very clean. I just want a through the roof setup, and have it there and be done with it. AND be able to show it off and look good while doing it. Thanks though

2005 TEK on 20s

« Reply #9 on: June 06, 2006, 05:07:16 PM »

Your explaination still really doesnt sound practical for why you want a through the roof setup. The antenna i have is the one that came with it. If you can intall the antenna very well, very hidden, and very clean then what more are you looking for out of putting at through the roof antenna besides possibly a leaking roof and rust? Not trying to sound like a smartass but it just sounds pratical with the magnetic mount antenna.

The antenna arrived today. I have all the parts I need, so I am ready to install. However, my dad doesn't want me to poke a hole in the roof, and has convinced me to call some shops around and get prices on custom installation, and get in writing that if it leaks that they replace it. Hmmmm, good idea??

The antenna was installed by a shop today. I had the instructions you gave me Newf layin in the passenger seat. The installer said he cheated and peeked at those instructions several times...he'd never been in a tek before. He he. They did come in handy. I'll put a few pics up tomorrow when my friend loans me his camera. Thanks

Antenna is awesome by the way!

03Aztek,

No problem, I am glad it helped.  Even though this technician was new to the Aztek, obviously even he needed to look at the information to see how it removes.  Understand that he does this for a living and even he needed assistance.  I think as you saw it is not a difficult procedure, just long and very tedious.

Well. I had it installed Friday. And I go back to have it re-done tomorrow. When I arrived to pick it up, I went and looked at it first, and jiggled it to see how tight it was. Real loose. Hmm, so I went in and they told me about they tightening the bolt, and then gluing it to create a seal and good fitting, not to mess with it because the glue was not dry. Ut oh. Later that night I see my messing with it left one corner sticking up, exposing it to the elements. Thank God it didn't rain while I was at work. I asked my maager if I could move it up on the sidewalk if it started to rain, and after griping about how everyone would be looking in it and thinking we are giving it away, said I could, if it rained. lol....give my tek away...over my dead body!

Sorr about the poor quality. All I have is my phone, and that is a p.o.s.
