I just spent the weekend replacing front struts/springs and outer tie-rods on a FWD 2001.
Not too bad, but the following need to be removed to get to the top strut bolts: wiper mech, fuse box, cruise control.  It only takes a few minutes to remove these items and it gives you a lot of room.

The top of both coil springs were broken, so it was a good time to replace everything.
