hi all.
Lurk here quite a bit but do not post.
Average Joe with a 2004 Aztek.

It is missing the spare tire and for the life of me I can not find information about adding a full size spare.
Mine has the optional 225/60-17" tire size.

So a simple question, will the spare tire well accept a full size spare - or should I go with the may-pop (users manual says Do not store a full-size or a flat road tire under the

Possibly because a full size does not allow the secondary spare tire latch will not engage?

Any info is helpful, thank you.

I honestly think an under-mounted spare is the worst idea in the history of cars - leave the spare where it and the mechanism that holds it are exposed to the elements (here in Canada that includes the road salt)?? Who the hell thought that was smart? When I got my 'Tek, first the first weekend I tried to lower the spare and found the mechanism was rusted to crap. Had my mechanic cut it off and now I store the spare in the cargo are, strapped to the side.

Diceallion, another member here, has a nice story about getting a flat on the expressway here in Toronto in the middle of the night only to found the spare wouldn't lower. My suggestion would be to get a full size and a nice cover and store it in the back so it's ready if you need it.

Good luck either way - if you're looking to store a full-size underneath I would be very surprised if the well would accomodate it. I love my Tek but GM was trying to cut costs so hard, I can't see them making the well any larger than necessary.

I'm lucky that I live in the "high desert" in the southern U.S. and get virtually NO snow, and when we do it's gone in 48 hours.
What that really translates to is they do not use salt here - Though I do understand, as I grew up in New England and have seen the devastation salt does to vehicles.

So as far as we know, a full size spare DOES NOT fit under in the place the tiny factory "may pop" goes.
I do like your idea of an internal full size, my Jeep Cherokee has just that and I don;t even notice it in the cabin, it is "just there"

it does not fit. I just bought an aztek and it had the spare in the trunk, when I got home and tried to put it back where it goes it would not fit. now I need a original spare or I have to keep the one I have in the trunk.

I have had maybe two flats - slow leaks, no blow-outs (knock wood) - I have never seen the spare, and felt it was easier to call AAA than go through the hassle of unloading all the stuff in the back just to see what the spare looked like. ( Ok, so I'm lazy - I'm also old and obstinate.)
