Title: Seatbelts
Post by: 03Aztek on January 13, 2008, 06:04:10 PM
So, do you wear your seatbelt, or do you put your full trust in your tek's crash test safety ratings?

I never used to...but for some reason I've just started to wear it all the time.

Always use it, in everything I've ever driven or ride in. It's all about ME and being SAFE!

I feel "wrong" without it on too... even if just moving around a driveway/parkinglot.

It is the seatbelts that adds up to the ratings the Tek achieved.  Without the belts on, the dummies would be ejected.   I can say for certain that seatbelts have saved my life already once.  I had to stop on a highway as traffic just stopped.  I was rear-ended by another car doing at least 55mph ( thats what he told the State Police as they impounded his wreck)- I was stopped.  I was in a Hyundai Elantra.

Better safe than sorry.  I was riding in a friends van on a back road one day and we got into some loose gravel.  We flipped the van three times and slammed into the side of the mountain.  Had it not been for the seat belt, and the airbag, i would not be able to post this fun story.  FYI, that accident also sealed the deal for me always having a cell phone.  I had the cell phone on my lap when the wreck started, and when we ended, the phone was still in the same spot.  Divine placement I guess.

I always were my seat belt.

I work at a Towing/Auto repair company that also does police impounds so I see all the wrecked cars that come in from accidents, and see the guy's faces when they come back from a bad accident where someone was hurt, it's not good. I don't want them coming to find me somewhere should I happen to be involved in an accident.

When my son was 3, he's now almost 28, I told him to put his seatbelt on and he asked me why I didn't wear mine. I've worn it all the time since.

Sorry, Im the black sheep when it comes to that question. The only time I put mine on is when the hubby is in the tek with me. ( That way I dont have to hear him NAG about it). To me the seatbelt it a pain in the azz. I enjoy the trip going through the windshield.

Had to think about it, but I remember when I started wearing mine. I was that way too but a buddy did his senior project over automobile safety....and his main focust was seatbelts. After seeing some of his research and such...that's when I started wearing mine.

That has been a NJ State law for a few years and just about a year ago it became one in PA too

Since when was it not a "click it or ticket"

For as long as I lived I thought that was the law... No question.

It was just recently passed in Kansas...like 3 maybe 4 years ago. Of course..there's exceptions. Nobody in the back seat has to have one, and the responsibiltiy of the passenger depends on if they're a minor or adult. But as of Jan 1 this year, anyone 13-17 HAS to have one on, no matter where they ride. Below 13 is a child, so they HAVE to have one too...and it carries a heavier fine being a child and all.

I always wear mine,  and anyone who rides with me.  My Car my Rules.

In college I was in a debate as part of a communications class, we were debating this very topic.  One thing that struck home with me, was that in my research I found out that the leading cause of children being killed in car accidents was by being crushed by adults that were not weraring their seatbelts.  Makes you think.........

Ever since I started driving waaay back in the mid 70's I have worn a seatbelt. Here's the reasoning- they don't let you go on amusement park rides without some kind of restraint (I know most of them aren't worth diddly).

My car or Tek won't move until ALL are belted in, kids and adults, front or back.

There should've been one more category in the poll:  "Most of the time."

No good excuse, really, just sometimes it's a bother.  I should know better, though, as I was a passenger in a car involved in a bad accident, and was fortunate to be wearing one at the time.  As well, I had someone hit my truck in a parking lot at about 15-20 mph - I wasn't wearing my seat belt and my head hit the windshield, giving me quite a nasty bump and breaking both my rear-view mirror and windshield.  Don't let anyone tell you that you don't need it for low speeds.

I hope that in the years since this post, you have changed your perspective!  In 2006 my 17 year old son was killed in a car accident -- auto accidents are no joke.  Seatbelts are no joke.  WEAR THEM! THEY SAVE LIVES!

Well, I must be older than you!  And live in a different country!  It has not always been the law here. Even now it's considered "secondary" in Colorado, meaning you can't be stopped for not wearing a seatbelt, but you can be cited if you are stopped for another reason and aren't wearing it.
