Title: Transmission replacment
Post by: Travelmin on April 20, 2018, 09:10:56 PM
SYMPTOMS:
Going into third gear steadily- grinding noise
Going into third gear stepping on it- tranny slip, enough to give a little jolt forward / no clunking noise
I've diagnosed failing transmission and transfer case, I'd like to know opinions on these symptoms.

REPLACMENT TRANNY/TRANSFER CASE:
I'm attempting to replace both these parts myself.

Is there any specialty tools I'm going to need? Not talking about regular tools, but something everyone doesn't just have on hand. (I'm rebuilding a Cummins truck to give a tool availablity idea)

I don't have a lift, so does anyone know how much space I'm going to need under the car to successfully remove and replace?

I'm looking to keep replacement parts as low cost as possible so I'm looking at salvaged trannys and transfer cases, has anyone had horror story endings with these kinds of replacements?

What do you think I should do? I just took it on a 300-400 mile round trip with no real issues but the above symptoms listed- and the symptoms aren't consistent just every once in awhile more so at the beginning of the drive then the end. Is it worth the effort?
If there are other posts on this forum that are a similar question I'd appreciate the information/direction.

Thanks in advance! ;D

Have you dropped the pan to see if its full of dust/particles/metal shavings?  If it's intermittent, maybe there is a solenoid at fault.  Also that Lucas transmission treatment is a miracle worker sometimes.

I don't have much time or room for this vehicle because the shop space I have is full of a torn apart truck. I'm really trying to get this all done in one shot or I'd inspect further.

If it's any constellation I had a transmission shop drain the transfer case and they said there wasn't anything in the fluid. When I replaced the transfer case fluid the grinding stopped for awhile after that but then started up again.

Thanks for the solenoid idea, and the Lucas suggestion. I think I'm going to try those first for sure. I really appreciate the help!

By transfer case, do you mean the all wheel drive module at the front of the drive shaft which goes to the rear axle?  There's a hack I read on here somewhere, where you can use Ford XL-3 limited slip friction modifier (it's cheap) and synthetic 90 weight in place of the $50 per pint GM special fluid, of which the rear differential requires four and the front transfer case requires one.

Here's the forum thread in question.. http://aztekfanclub.com/powertrainperformance-upgrades/'my'-cheap-versatrak-replacement-fluid/

And, you're welcome :-)  Glad to help.  Aztek owners gotta stick together!

So I changed the tranny fluid finally!
No large metal in the bottom of the pan, but there was quite a bit of black gunk on the magnet.

I'm sad to say that the ATF was black when changed it.
I did add the Lucas.

The short drive I did take was a success no grind or slips. Felt like it was stronger through first and second gear getting up to speed quicker then normal.

I'm noticing two other weird things:
1)When I shift down into 1st manually there is a buzzing noise
2)when I get going 3rd gear is almost non existent shifting up to 4 th gear almost immeadiately

If anyone has any clue about one or the other would appreciate information direction or advice. Thanks in advance!

Wondering if it might be the solenoids.
