 Huh  I am new to this forum...love the pics!!!  Especially the drive shaft.  I am having a problem with the "front drive shaft?"  Is that it's true part name?  At any rate, I have a clunking noise when i put it into reverse and also, a loud noise like a bag of bottle caps rattling while driving or pressing on gas (never while idle).  The mechanic lifted it and said I had "two drive shafts" and the one that has the rubber boot on it..that boot is broken and bearings and such are exposed.  I've been trying to locate this part but can't seem to call it the right name or it's only available for all other cars and not my '05 Tek.  I think it is also called a front propeller drive shaft?Huh  Please help this very technically savy girl whom is stumped by this one.

As Dumpy said, they are called CV axles.  CV = constant velocity. 

There are two CV joints on each axle, an inner and an outer. 

Your Aztek has two axles, a left (driver side) and a right (passenger side).  The driver side is shorter than the passenger side.  Because of that it is put under more stress than the passenger side, and usually is the first one to fail.

If the rubber boot that covers the CV joint gets torn, it will allow dirt to enter the joint, which acts like sand paper and wears the joint down very quickly.  For this reason, it's best to change the CV joint if the boot is damaged.

While you can replace just the CV joint when it fails, it's usually easier and more cost effective to replace the whole axle.

You should be able to get replacement axles at any auto parts store.  I replaced the ones on my 2003 Aztek with new ones from AdvanceAuto.  They cost around $75 each and come with a lifetime warranty.   To get the correct axle, you need to know which side (left or right) and whether your Aztek is front wheel drive (FWD) or all wheel drive (AWD aka VersaTrak).

Installation isn't that hard to do if you have experience working on cars (brake, suspension, etc)  but requires some special tools.  You'll need a 34mm socket to remove the main axle nut, and a slide-hammer style axle puller to remove the axle from the transmission.   You'll also need a torque wrench to properly tighten the main axle nut (torque to 192 ft/lbs).  The axle puller and torque wrench can be borrowed from most AutoZone stores as part of their tool lending program.  They will sell you the tools, and when you are done you can return them for a full refund.  The slide hammer puller (part number 27058) will also require an axle puller adapter (part number 27033) which looks a bit like a large crows foot.  It is also available from AutoZone's tool lending program.

I believe the official way to remove an axle involves disconnecting the lower control arm (at the ball joint) and the outer tie rod end.  But I've found the easiest way is to simply remove the wheel hub assembly (3 bolts) which will allow the end of the axle to slide most of the way out through the hub hole in the steering knuckle.  This allows just enough room to remove the axle from the transmission without having to disconnect any other suspension parts.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube that show how to replace the axles, and there may be a couple that show how to do it on an Aztek.
