Title: Original car stereo (Aztek 2005) started turning off/on, aparently randomly
Post by: rmeza1 on June 21, 2018, 05:45:33 PM
Hello friends,

Recently my original car stereo (Aztek 2005) started turning off/on, aparently on a random basis.

If the stereo was "ON" at the moment the issue occured, it will return to the current radio station that was being tuned, and there's no memory reset, it keeps the stations preset in memory, only the clock gets deleted on each cycle, showing 12:00.

If the stereo was "OFF", it stays off, and the same behaviour occurs.

According to your expertise, these anomaly can be fixed ?, it's related to the car stereo ?

Thank you for your help and time,

Regards,
Rafael M.

When you say it is turning off. Does it display 'Locked' on the radio? Any other warning lights come on with the dash?

Hello,

No warning lights, just the display goes blank for a second, then comes back showing 12:00, and you can hear a few clicks like if it was checking the disks trays.

Thank's for your help.

Thats a uncommon problem, but I have heard of it before. I will see if I can find the repair process.

I could be wrong, but I think it involves either just replacing the radio, or something with the BCM. Will let you know if I find it.

After a bit of quick digging around...

Do all your interior lights work? Check fuses
Do your front and rear cigarette lighter ports work? Check fuses
Has the radio ever been replaced? I know you said it was the original radio, but you never mentioned if you were the original owner. Sometimes when people replace radios, they cut the harness off to replace the radio. Then wire back in the original harness when they sell the truck with the original radio. The butt connectors used, if not properly tight, can short out.
How is the battery? Take it to AutoZone/Advance and get it checked. An internally shorted battery will cause this problem. The radio pre-sets are stored on a chip, and are not affected by low voltage, clock is.
How is the alternator? Take it to AutoZone/Advance and get it checked. If the brushes are bad it can cause a electrical spike. The radio pre-sets are stored on a chip, and are not affected by low/high voltage, clock is.
Has your trucks ECM/BCM been updated? There was a glitch in the firmware that caused this problem for some years.

Thats what I found so far...
