Take me back to the first day I joined!

WWW
« on: May 06, 2010, 07:43:42 AM »

Well as of 9:00am this morning about 30 min of labour and a total cost of 30$ with tip...  DATEK is no longer a versatrak vehicle. Literally cut off the Ball joints and removed the drive shaft!!!  Drained the oils in the rear diff and that's it, no more...  Let me say the truck is the quietest I ever had in all the years of owning it.  I am so happy. No more versatrak graoning and moaning no more diff bearing whining. Just smooth and quiet. Will post pics later.

Cheesy  I have never heard of anyone doing that before.  But it sounds like it went just fine.  I bet it is alot quieter.

The best darn thing I could have ever done on the truck!!!  I should have done this years ago instead of investing on the darn thing. 160$ just for the transfer case oil the gasket a while back and what ever else head ache it gave me.

Is versatrak really that loud?  Does it only make noise when AWD kicks in or is it all the time?

For me it was all the time....  I had a bad diff bearing that I was not going  to pay the few hundred bucks to change. I also had a leaking gasket from my transfer case!!!  Also a bad wheel hub wire  sensor that makes my abs/awd light stay on, so I havnt had my versatrack active for over two years!!!  No way I'll change a bearing for a new wire.  SO saying that i just eleminated the whole dam thing!!!

Can you explain this to me?   New here.  Just bought an 01 which I was informed by the certifying mechanic that the noise in the rear was normal.
Another mechanic checked it out and told me that the rear differential is shot and needs to be replaced for a cost of 1900 including labour.
Will doing what ever you did fix the problem permanently?

I have seen firsthand what Dice did to his Tek.  Everything from the driveshaft back is now gone.  He had everything cut out. Unfortunately he will have the awd light on the dash display forever now too.  Welcome to the AFC and sorry to hear of the bad news.  There is a great bunch of people here to help you whenever you need it .  Ps where you from?

Thanks 97drexelgrad.  We are from Belleville, ON.  Does doing this effect the overall safety of the car?  I can live with the AWD light being on, the AWD wasn't the reason I wanted the car.
I can't live with the $1900 bill to replace the rear differential 3 days after purchasing the vehicle.  + the $1000 in other repairs.   Still love "Big Yeller" though....just hope I can get her feeling well ASAP.

Also what do you think the likely hood of a mechanic doing this for someone is?

I'm sure that Diceallion will chime in on this topic as he is very happy now with his former versatrak Tek.
Have you contacted the dealer that sold you the Tek and show them the estimate on the needed repairs?

My very first reaction would be to take it back to the dealer you bought it from and make them fix it, especially a $1900 repair!!
