I wish I knew what I was doing....

« on: November 15, 2010, 04:11:16 PM »

Anybody know of a 3800 series II supercharged aztek?   Meaning anyone out here know of one already done? I have read lots about wanting to do one but who here actually has done it or seen one done?  I ask in good faith becuase i am considering this option.  My 2001 has the noted shift issues in the transmission, unfortunately I just did my LIM a couple of weeks ago and my egr tube is like a salt and pepper shaker (perforated). A little JB Weld to tie it off and now I just tripped over a GTP that is rotten on its rocker panels and the owner wants it gone. Maybe $400  for the whole car minus the wheels. So drop $400 in transmission parts and an egr tube or do a swap? I fired the GTP and it runs well, fluids are clean, can't drive it becuase the brake lines leak, but it has gears, runs well, no codes (scanned it) and has about 60 000 km (37,282.36 miles) less than my tek. I can see it will drop right in, and I can see I will need a little harness modification.  I figure if I use the GTP pcm and setup I will only need to unlock my radio for security issues, the tires are the same size so the shift points and speedo should be the same.  The security on the base model tek is only a starter bypass and a fuel pump cut off so it is easy to get around.  Any one?  Comments please....    I don't want to pass up a good powertrain and lose it, in other words don't wanna look a gift horse in the mouth.   Please any real thoughts?

I say go for it Brenner. You could be a hero among the loyal membership. I've always said that using everything from the same donor car makes the most sense to me. Gotta be much easier to swap in all of the control modules at once and have the motor and trans operate off of known inputs rather than trying to force the Aztek's computers to operate things properly. I was always curious as to whether or not the entire engine cradle could be utilized to limit the amount of custom fabrication of brackets and what not. Good luck to you and absolutely let us know how it goes!

Thank you for the support guys,  I cannot promise to deliver but it is weighing heavy since the coin is right.  My only draw back is  having to run the premium fuel.  Also as supported by ar4s1 I agree and have always thought to run all components that I can from the donor car.  I have been researching this and the wiring differences and will make my decision at that time. I want to replace the noted rocker cover leak problem also when I have the powertrain out. So off to the books I go and a little more info. I have a habit of only keeping cars a short while and if I do this I want to keep it for a bit, kind of alot of work if I don't plan on keeping it. Don't forget guys I have a few toys already, my 70 T/A, my 73 formula , my 50 studebaker starlight coupe, my 53 chev belair, etc..  But yes I still think it will make a great daily driver with some fun. If I do attempt it I will take lots of pics and try to make a "How TO"  thread with the wiring info and all required changes.  I will let you all know if it becomes real or a pipe dream.

Okay guys  so here goes the deliberation,  I have kinda cheated and rebuilt my egr tube  properly for nothing  and now am debating over the transmission.  After talking with my wife we agreed even though I may not keep the tek after a year or so she will most likely take it as her leased import will be due to turn in.  So, now on Monday I think I will go approach the owner of the GTP and make sure it is still available for the price we had in mind.  If all goes well I will end up with it, take it to a shop and pull the whole front assembly frame and all after figuring the wiring out.  Now whether I use the full powertrain or not, I will  be pulling the transmission out and rebuilding it  for the tek, I am only hoping the gtp passenger axle will work for the GTP has a heavy duty transmission and the case is larger thus the difference in axles.  Time will tell,   I should be able to pull the goodies from the gtp (stereo and disc changer, full leather interior, stainless exhaust, cold air intake etc...) and scrap the rest to get most of my money back so the project won't hit the pocket book too hard.  I gotta pull my dump truck out to haul the gtp on my trailer to the shop and to the recyclers. Now I may have a new job so this may slow down this project and Xmas is coming so time will tell. If the car is gone then the project is off but if I get it then I will play. God I am a glutton for punishment. I know alot of others have talked about it and not followed through and I don't want to lead anyone on but I may try this. I kinda wish I had done this right off the start and not replaced my LIM becuase my 3.4 runs well and it's kind of a shame to replace when it works fine. If my transmission didn't have harsh shifts when hot I wouldn't entertain the idea of a swap.   This may be my last project aside from my 70 T/A being upgraded as I grow tired of these toys with the work and honestly am thinking of cutting back to one toy and an airplane, I want to take it to the sky and have a project in sight but I am not financially set so i take what i can get and build the rest. I figure if I sell off the toys I got now then I can afford my plane.  I am one of those who depends on no one and does everything myself. But back to the tek, we'll see what happens Monday and if the weather stays decently warm and I am not back at work soon I should have a start and a better idea of what this is gonna take. Till then,  Cheers

If you run into any issues with the electronics, let me know.  I put a lot of research into the swap, just never found the cash to follow through.

alchemist , thanks for the offer but this project is dead in the water, atleast for now.    Wow and I mean wow.  I find it amazing how some people can be so cool then change and go against what they said earlier.   So long story short my $400  car changed to $1000 with no wheels, supercharger, stereo etc...   after the owner made me the $400 offer he looked online and checked wrecker prices.   Apparently he should get wrecker prices for everything and not have to dismantle the parts of provide a warranty for them plus he wants the wheels and stereo in case he needs them in the future (not that I care).  I asked if I was wrong that he quoted me $400 and he said no I wasn't but since then he checked and it is worth more becuase somone wants it. So now the price has gone up and he wants what he wants from the car.  He told me to buy it and part it on kijiji so I get my money back (yeah right, and my time is worth what?)   So maybe I should have jumped on it when he first offered it but now I don't want to deal with him. He became a tool, and even if he changed his mind I wouldn't bother, a man's word is all he's got and this man is nothing in my eyes.  I asked him if I misunderstood the first offer and he said no that was then and this is now and tomorrow it goes to $1500 minus what he wants so I told him to keep it today, tomorrow, and whenever he feels it's worth that much becuase I wasn't gonna waste my time.  No fights, thanked him for letting me see it and I left.  The way I fugure it if he lied about the price maybe he is lying about it's condition. I feel bad for starting this thread and not suceeding but I can honestly say it was nothing I did (even he states that), and it is out of my control. If I come across another I will consider it again, for there are more and more of these powertrains coming available.  Sorry guys please do not hold it against me.   Anybody wanna buy a half parted GTP for $1000, better act fast the next day it will be $1500  lmfao.....

Again thanks for the support, I live by the rules of live and let live. My wife always tells me karma , what goes around comes around so hopefully a similar situation will happen to him but you just that kind of person will never see the irony. I don't want to wish no ill will on anyone, god knows I've had my fill. Some people are lucky in life and others have to fight for everything, I am in the second group and honestly I wouldn't have it any other way. I earn my stuff and no handouts have been given so I keep my head up high on that one. I am gonna keep my eye open and if I come across another I will at that time decide if it is a go or no go. Too many irons in the fire, getting older, and have a list a mile long of things I'd love to try or do. Not all will get completed but I gotta try a few atleast.  Thanks again guys,  this forum has quite a few good members.  Cheers.

I promised an update if I came across something  so here it is.....   I have found a GTP with a 3.8 SC with a factory replacement transmission with less than 30 000 km / 18000 miles.     $700 o.bo.
I contacted the poster and they claim it runs well and they want it gone so give them a "best offer",  they have been sitting on it listed in the online classifieds for more than 2 months now.  I am gonna go see it, if it is a decent powertrain then maybe this project may be back on the burner, either yes or no for the project I am still going to see it for the transmission and if I get it will tear it down as a rebuild and will run the mn7 instead of a m15 or m76  ( hd transmission versus the regular model).   I am really curious to see if the GTP axle will make the transmission fit right in the tek. Aside from gear ratio's and the right axle assembly needing be shorter to fit becuase of the heavier assembly, the difference is minimal. If I were rebuilding I'd replace to the upgraded valvebody anyways and the drive chain I heard is different (no biggie).  Don't hold your breath becuase after the last seller  I am unsure.  I hope to make the 20 minute trip Thursday or Friday, I gotta work around the owners schedule.   By the way anyone ever see GTP 5 star wheels on a Tek?    Just curious.
