Title: Just A Newbie with an '01 GT
Post by: BlueGT on October 01, 2017, 10:29:48 PM
Hello,

Picked up this Steel Blue GT for next to nothing today. 1 of just 4638 Steel Blue Metallic Azteks made in 2001. One owner Texas car. Has a sunroof, HUD, DIC, Dual Zone, cloth interior, leveling suspension, tow package, traction control and the RDS CD cassette stereo with 10 speakers. 121,000 miles.

Hopefully soon I will get the hood painted and get it detailed so I can get pics with my friend's 1 of 473 2003 Rally. Laird was the hit of the local car show this past month.

It will be fun for hauling my mermaid tails though I couldn't find a green Aztek to match them, blue will do just fine.

I am sure I will have questions coming!

Welcome, and congratulations! That is one fully loaded Aztek. Looks to be in good shape.

What's this about mermaid tails?!

Thank you none. I'm a mermaid! :)

Made Crystal Blue Persuasion (that name may or may not stick) her first modification last night! Added an auto-dimming rear view mirror with homelink and light.

Impressive! I have yet to start modifying my Aztek. Glad to know something like this can be done.

I like the nickname... goes well with the mermaid thing, and is also a nod to the Aztek's connection to Breaking Bad.

Woohoo! I just got a lead on a set of original factory accessory seat covers in a local junkyard on an AWD 2001. These guys are kind of jerks but I hope I can pour on the charm and they let me back in the yard to get them and see if it has any other goodies.  ;D

You are quickly becoming my hero! Before long you will have every option ever made  ;D

The few. The proud. The Aztek diehards!

Yay, I get the fun of replacing the underhood fuse box this weekend. Power to the fuel pump fuse but it's not going to the relay like it should. Fortunately, it's an easy job.

I was about to type "I'd rather do that than tackle the thermostat"... but I do not wish to bring bad luck on myself  ;D

KNOCK ON WOOD

JINX

I just finished replacing my thermostat & now I never want another project (other than upgrades). Everything has been easy on this car until that stupid thermostat project. Even the rear bank of spark plugs were cake in comparison.

I was looking under the hood and yes, the t-stat looks to be a major pain!

I finally took her on the road today, still need to get the blessing from the state to use public roads that I paid for (but that's a rant for another time).

Did a junkyard excursion today, hoping to find a trans out so I could rob the 4th gear clutch hub shaft as mine is apparently sheared (no 4th gear  :-\ ) but no dice. Will order a new one and install it.

I did get a few little things for her today, like the cabin filter door cover which was missing. It's a little thing that no one will ever see but it makes me feel good that it's there again.

The rear brakes on the Mermaid are the originals! I need to address this soon but am undecided as to whether to go get all new drum parts or put rear discs from a 1998-2005 U van which appear to be a direct bolt on.  ;) I was considering seeing if an IRS from a Rendezvous would fit but it doesn't seem to after looking under an Aztek and a Buick side by side, looks like some different mounting points are on the Buick that aren't on the Aztek and not able to be added without some fab work.

Simply amazing! I can tackle replacing the filter door, but transmissions scare the crap outa me. Kind of amazing that you have the energy, skill, and motivation to do all these big things! Keep up the good work!

;D Energy and motivation are the two that are debatable. hah! And thank you,. I do my best.

Since GTs never came with anything that actually said they were a GT, I added my own as well as a Heisenberg decal.

And the required tail shot. hehe  ;) Usually they are in the bag but I had to take them out for a pic.

Went to a junkyard an hour north of Austin and found 2 Azteks with good dashes so I grabbed one for my 'tek.

And a friend of ours that we often trade parts with found 2 'teks with the cargo net package and he sent both to me.

Also after a month since buying it on ebay for $20 shipped, I finally got a cooler.

Hey there Blue, I love that color! Unique, indeed. I have a 2003 but I really wanted a 2001. You found a good one with all of the options!

You are a hero! That dash replacement was a helluva undertaking! And you were able to get it all back together again!!

I see you had the instrument cluster out. That would be the time to replace any burnt out bulbs in your dash. I can't get over that it takes a soldering iron to replace them!!

I found a Tek in the junkyard that had the HUD and the better stereo. I considered taking those out, along with the instrument cluster, but my guess is I would need the whole wire harness too, to make all that stuff work properly. I did take the steering wheel with the radio controls, as well as the rear radio controls and speakers, figuring I can hook them up to a more modern stereo.

Hah, I don't know about being a hero but it was a whole lot of work. Worth it though! Thank you for the kind words.

Nearly all my bulbs work, amazingly enough. The stereo has bulbs out, of course but we are considering either a Vibe/Matrix navigation unit or do something I almost never do and go aftermarket.

As far as adding HUD, DIC and such, that will be an undertaking and it may get done to our friend Laird's Aztek this year so we will keep everyone updated on how that goes.

I need to express my sincere respect for you taking in this poor, neglected thing and the incredible efforts at nursing it back to health.  It is kind of personal for me because it looks just like the car I've owned since 2001.  I found mine on a Pontiac dealers lot in Maryland when it was still a young thing and it's lived with me ever since.  Mine doesn't have the sunroof or the cassette player (just the CD player), and I've never counted how many speakers it's got, but it still looks like it came out of the same womb as yours.  It gives me hope that somebody might want to take mine in someday when I'm no longer around.  :D

The factoids you take the time and trouble to post are very interesting as well.  I don't know where those 1956 blue GTs ended up, 'cause I've seen very few blue Azteks of any kind for all the years I've been driving mine. And I've lived in Maryland, New Mexico, and now back in Texas since I brought mine.

I have seen the color expressed as "Steel Blue Metallic" many times previously, but the original invoice on my car just called it "Medium Blue" and the 305D color code on my car is referred to as "Opal Blue Metallic", so I don't know.  However, I've seen the "Steel Blue" enough that I think it's good to stick with.

You seem more than competent to deal with any problems you may have with your Aztek, but if anything ever comes up where you think my experience with a very similar car might be of help, don't hesitate to contact me and ask.  I will gladly tell you anything I know or readily admit if I'm totally clueless.  Best of luck with your endeavor.

Not much new. Replaced the 4th gear clutch hub shaft and still don't have 4th, thinking it might be the valvebody.  ::)

Hubby was out a couple of weeks ago and met another Aztek owner. Gotta watch him as he said she was very sweet. hah He helped her hold her hatch up as she loaded her car.

Well, I finally got 4th gear fixed. Yay! New valve body and clutches did that trick.

Had a close call this morning, hubby went out and picked up a b-day gift for me and got about halfway back when the temp gauge was almost to the red. He immediately shut off the A/C and turned on the heater to cool it back down as he was close to home. He was lucky, 150 degrees blowing on him while it's 108 out! Anyhow, after a lot of time and cussing, he tracked down a corroded ground wire for the fans, they weren't turning fast enough to cool the engine. All fixed and running cool again.

The Service Vehicle Soon light came on, a high beam wasn't working. Bulb was good, had power to it but GM in their infinite wisdom instead of grounding the bulb, runs the DRL from the ground side back through the relay and fuse and somewhere around Robin Hood's barn to a ground that can't be found. I said screw it and bypassed the DRL and grounded the headlight bulb itself so it works, got inspection in a couple of weeks. I might fix it right if I can when the weather cools down.

I know the solenoids in the valvebody are the weak link on these. I need to get them replaced on the Tek before one takes a dump. They have been upgraded since the vehicle production days.

Good info on the fan. I just had this exact same thing happen this week. 2 weeks ago over 4th of July had no issues though on a trip sitting in traffic. Just started out of the blue.

I replaced all the solenoids as well for good measure.  8)

Check the ground wire in the fuse box, you will need to remove the top of the fuse box (not just the cover) and unscrew all the 7mm bolts to access it. It will be in the gray box, you will see it when you remove the fuse box top to unplug all the connector boxes underneath. Ours was not only corroded, but burned slightly from the resistance caused by the corrosion.

Welcome brother from A-Body land. Lots of work to bring that girl back to roadworthiness. Only other big thing you get to look forward to is the C305-Ectomy. Its a fun job (NOT!).

You mentioned something about the Factory Seat Covers? You have a pic of them. Never seen them.
