Hi all, I have an 01 AWD and the stock amplifier is going out on it (as least that what the dealer service mechanic said...)I have an aftermarket head unit installed for a while now and thinking of just removing the stock amp and do without an amp for now.  it's probably better than hearing the static noise in the speakers that gradually gets louder when the engine is reving up at acceleration.
Does anyone has instructions on removing the stock amp and reconnect/splice the speaker wires at that junction?

From what I understand, the stock amplifier is located on the passenger side rear compartment behind the trim. now as far as removing the trim is, that my friend seems to be another animal. I'm hoping someone has done this already, as in remove the rear side trim to replace the 2 rear compartment speakers for those that have that option, I plan on removing all stock speakers and radio in the spring and install a nice custom setup with replacing those 6x9 rear with some subs.......

The stock amp is actually located on the firewall above the ebrake handle.  The back speakers are actually a separate 6 or 6 1/2" midrange and 4" full range speaker on each side and not a 6x9.  The entire backside panels need to be removed to do so.  You cant simply just remove the speaker grills as there are speaker enclosures behind them.

how big is stock amp? how many watts are the stock speakers? i have the 10 speaker setup and it sounds great! considered an upgrade eventually, but later on down the road...

When you remove the speaker, doesn't that destroy it? I tried lightly to remove it, but stopped a I did not wanna jack it up, cause I know finding interior parts for our trucks is not an easy thing...

I seem to remember that GM called it a 360 watt system.  Not certain though.  The amp has no user adjustable settings.  When I had my Tek, I planned on putting better Pioneer Speakers in the back.  I purchsed a set of 6 1/2" 4 way speakers and a pair of JBL 4".  When I put the 6 1/2's in, they only played Mid's.  So the OEM amp is crossed over to only allow mid-bass through there.  The 4" JBL's were much brighter on the highs.

If you plan on changing the system, you will need antenna adapters, an interface for chimes (ie seatbelt reminder, turnsignal on reminders etc. as the sounds are generated by the radio and played through the front left speaker.  If you have Onstar- yes, there's another module needed.  Oh, and I don't know for certain, but I think that you loose your steering wheel and rear cargo controls.  

I added an Infinity BassLink in the back for a little more bump and fill.  Self amplified 10" sub in a small enclosure.

did you take out the speaker or try to remove the grille?  The speakers will come out- In fact I have 4 of the door speakers from a standard, non 10 speaker system in my garage.

The entire rear cargo area needs to come out to gain access to the speakers.  Thats, all of the cargo hooks, the trim panels on the back floor, and I don't remember, but maybe the seatbelt bolts too.

Actually I was talking about the grills actually, I have yet to get to the speakers themselves, as what I feared is imminent. I prefer to just remove the grills but as I said before, I think thats just going to destroy the grills. I plan on putting a custom 6" or 8" jbl's subs on that spot using a good 5 channel amp. Probably a alpine pdx-5 or somewhere along those lines

I am actually planning on doing the same thing. I plan on removing those rear speakers and putting a custom 8" or dual 6" subs on each side. I would prefer to go with JL's though, as I had a 6" jl in my previous car before my family grew, my beloved 2000 Audi A4 1.8T, this had a stock 6" sub that you did not notice until you put your ear by the rear side trim and feel vibration. I did not know until I had the car for 4 months  Shocked Anyhow, my project this spring will be to remove both rear panels to size up the projest and to see what it needs and all.........i'm going to confirm where the stock amp is as I plan on getting a good 5 channel as well, and I wanna use the factory wiring to power the door speakers, this is one thing that GM usually dont go cheap on, speaker wiring is usually  pretty decent.
