Smile! You're driving an Aztek!

« on: June 19, 2008, 03:58:28 PM »

I was soooo excited when my local dealer pulled off a miraculous financial "Cirque du Soliel" act and put me behind the wheel of my 2005 Aztek for only $11 more per month than I was paying on my 2003 Ford Focus.  I've really liked the Aztek since it first came out, but couldn't afford one before.  But, there I was, just 2 weeks ago, driving home in my "dream vehicle", anxious to tell my friends about my good fortune!

Imagine my chagrin, then, when the first 3 friends I told about my new purchase said (verbatim), "Why did you buy such an ugly car?"

Ugly? I don't get it.  With all the Honda Elements, and Toyota Prius', and Scion -anything-, they dare to call the Aztek ugly?  Initially, I was just a teensy bit peeved at the feedback, but then I quickly turned it around into an "endearing" quality about the vehicle, naming my 'Tek "Taz", after the cartoon Tasmanian Devil, who, whilst a tad unattractive is never-the-less a potent force of nature to be reckoned with.

Then, the strangest thing began to happen.  Everywhere I went, when I would run into a "stray" person in the shopping store or gas station parking lot, and they'd cautiously approach me, take a quick look around to make sure no one else was listening, then say to me, "You've got such a nice car!  I always wanted one of those, but my friends all told me it was 'ugly'."

In fact, this past weekend I made a quick late-night run to the grocery store and encountered another woman who was stranded in the parking lot, her Ford Expedition refusing to turn over.  "Can you help me?" she asked hopefully, "I think I left my lights on when I was shopping.  Do you happen to have jumper cables?"

"Sure," I replied.  You don't live in climates like Duluth, Minnesota, where winter temperatures can fall to 50 below zero, without packing jumper cables, extra clothing and maybe even a sleeping bag.

I hopped in "Taz," and pulled him around to face her Ford Expedition so that I could connect our batteries.

"Oh, my GOD!" she exclaimed.  "You've got such an AWESOME car!  I want one of those sooo bad!  Oh, am I envious!"

Envious.  She's driving a Ford Expedition, probably worth twice as much as Taz, and a vehicle popular enough to have sold over 1,000,000 since 2004, and she's envious of my little unloved Pon-Pon that GM killed off after only 4 short years?  Huh!

That got me to thinking... y'know, I wonder how many people actually don't like the looks, and how many are merely repeating what they heard or read in a magazine review?  For all the negative comments and smears in the media and on blogs (and even a book entitled "Code Complete 2: The Pontiac Aztek and the Perils of Design by Committee"), it seems that in reality the Aztek is a rather popular vehicle.

Perhaps more romantically put:  We have secret admirers!

How cool is that?!

On top of that, I've recently discovered another wonderful nuance of Aztek ownership, which harkens back to the days when I owned a Jeep Wrangler... whenever I pass another Aztek going the opposite direction, the driver almost invariably "waves" to me, as if we're in a secret society of enlightened souls.  I return the wave, of course, but it's still taking me by surprise each time, though I hope to be the one initiating the greeting soon.

In recent decades, many Americans have been harping on domestic automakers such as GM, accusing them of stale, substandard and far-less-than-bold design.  But is that -really- the automakers fault?  After all, GM took a chance and put the Aztek out there, only to be met with scorn and disgust and lack of sales.  Ironically, the so-called "innovative" foreign automakers saw the potential, and the next thing you know, the market is awash in "Crossover" vehicles.  Meanwhile GM sadly tucked it's tail between it's legs and went back to marketing uninspiring SUV's.

Ugly?

Hardly.

But, then, everyone thought the "Emperor's New Clothes" were beautiful...  with the exception of the innocent child untouched by peer pressure.  God bless the little child in all of us Aztek owners!

Well put! The Aztek was indeed ahead of its time. Everyone moans they wan't something different, but when push comes to shove they get a cookie-cutter on wheels like everyone else's.

my friends went through that stage too when i first got my tek. Then i realized that if I tell them to get inside and i will take them for a ride. then after they actually drive it and see what all it does , they quickly change their tune.

I like the "secret admirers" concept.  Makes sence.

What has surprised me is the number of people that have come up to me and asked "Is that NEW?" or "I haven't seen one of these on a lot yet. Is it an 2008?"

Have all these people been living under a rock? (Granted small town Texas is pretty close to being under a rock.)

Other Azteks don't "notice" me... Huh

This is funny: The other night, leaving work. I am at a stoplight that when green you are on the on-ramp (the smaller highway dead-ends to the interstate). ANYWAY... I was waiting for a green light - like second or thrid in line. Then I notice another black Azetk exiting the highway and passes me to the left (divided highway). I watch it go by, I turn and watch it pass on by behind me - looking for a Rally badge on the rear glass. Didn't see it. *bye bye other Aztek*. Turn back around - the light has turned green and the others in front of me are a few car lengths away already.... ooops! No on had honked at me yet to MOVE! LOL. Stomp on the gas, and Aztek-a-go-go. (And, as I said above, the other Aztek driver didn't notice me!!?)

I, too, used to be a Wrangler owner so I understand the **wave**.   When my hubby wrecked  my Wrangler I started driving the "family sedan".  I still waved at the Wrangler's and they must have thought I was nuts!
Yeah, I used to be made fun of as well, for driving the ugliest car on the planet.  And I do agree those Scions, Elements and PT Cruisers (except maybe the convertible ones) are ugly.  But when my family went camping with us and we were sleeping in our warm car (attached to the tent) while they were sleeping on the cold ground they changed their mind!  Try hooking your tent up to your little Honda - can't do it!
I love my Aztek and am said when it plays out I won't be able to get a new one.  I think she has a few more years left in her!

I've noticed this very same thing.  There were only a few people who knew what an Aztek was.  Everyone else asks "who makes this?" or "you always have to have the latest thing don't you."

What has surprised me is the number of people that have come up to me and asked "Is that NEW?" or "I haven't seen one of these on a lot yet. Is it an 2008?"

Bill

You know as unique as as each individual azteks we have here, and I know I am "one of a kind" in my whole area, I never NEVER get noticed by other azteks...  Bugs the poop out of me.  Seems like every other aztek owner in my region except Ron (Gatinotek) despises their vehicle and wish they had not bought them, they all seem sad and miserable...
